Do you need 1200 calories?

April 30, 20243 min read

When it comes to fat loss, I know that nearly all of you reading this will have tried the magic 1200 calories

It really is the number MyFitnessPal L O V E S to give you when you select you want to lose the maximum weight per week because let's face it, who doesn't want this over quickly..

But

You know as well as I do that that number doesn't "work" for most of you

It's not because it's still too many calories, it's because it's bloody AWFUL to stick to

(The dizziness that hits by around 5pm because you've only eaten 700 calories so far to try and hold out until dinner is not the head rush I'd recommend)

So where do you go from here?

My client O checked in last week and has lost 20lbs since New Year despite last year going through a period of not losing weight for months, even though she was put on 1200 calories by her previous coach

Spoiler: she's on WAAAAY more than that rn

Now, you and I both know she probably wasn't eating 1200 calories because there's not a lot more demoralising than being on toddler calories when you're 5ft 10 and constantly hungry

But it made her think she couldn't drop body fat

And it even led to her giving up on training altogether until she joined my group coaching in September 2023

When I set her initial calorie targets she practically laughed in my face because they were so much higher than she was used to

But this is the magic

When it comes to fat loss, it's really not about being on the lowest number of calories possible

It's about finding a routine that works for you

O works long shifts, often doubles and is regularly eating on the go

She needs to feel sustained, not knackered, otherwise she gets home + is straight on the phone to Domino's

In the 3 months so far that we've worked together, we've prioritised:

Eating 3-4 meals a day

Prepping food

Avoiding long gaps between meals (a previous trigger point for snacking)

Increasing fruit + veg intake

Checking in with hunger and fullness

Reducing guilt around food choices

The outcome?

All achieved whilst still going for meals out, having the occasional pizza (naked in bed with Prosecco, no less), enjoying cake from her favourite bakery and actually enjoying her training plan...

Not all of you reading this will want to lose body fat but for those of you who do, I want to remind you that it is possible to achieve your fat loss goals without losing your quality of life

Or without spending hours in the gym or walking around aimlessly

So for a:

Training plan that will help you achieve PBs

Fat loss POA that won't have you skipping all social plans for 3 months

Coach who gives a shit about your mental and physical health
